The Website & App
Chemist Direct has been going through a lot of transformation and kept changing its direction as a business. It has moved through many phases and has taken a cleaner and clearer design approach to improve the volume of traffic, conversion and total revenue.
HEART OF THE MATTER
For many people in the UK, remembering to take a daily medication can be the difference between life and death. Yet, people forget all the time. According to studies, below are the facts and costs behind not taking medicines:
- 50% of patients not taking medications as prescribed.
- 20–30% of patients never filled their medication.
- Lack of medicine adherence is estimated to cause approximately 125,000 deaths a year.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
How might we help patients for compliance to medication and regular appointments, so that they will never fall ill as a result?
“How might we” statement leads us to focus on some of the specific goals which provide easy solutions to the problem.
- User should never miss medications and hospital appointments due to bad memory and related factors.
- User can easily access his medication and appointment histories.
- Family access to patients’ medication and appointments, so that everyone in the family knows the record.
- Tips related to improving patients’ health conditions.

SCOPE & FOCUS
Designing Android and iOS applications to help the patients to track their medications and hospital appointments.
Looking at some of the highlights of creating an app:
RESEARCH
Before defining the specific project goals, I created a research plan and worked on researching in depth using different methodologies:
Primary Research
During this Research we conducted 1-on-1 remote interviews with users to identify their pain points, requirements, preferences, and general opinions about their current medication adherence/non-adherence methods/issues. Remote interviews were conducted with 5 different people and a persona and empathy map was created based on the user interview result.
Secondary Research
For this method I assimilated basic information and increased the knowledge about the medication nonadherence and its causes via online articles, blogs, and forums.
Competitive Analysis
During competitor analysis UX researcher and I identified the services provided by direct and indirect competitors in the UK, to understand their strengths and shortcomings.
Persona
Persona was created reflecting the interviewee’s lifestyle, routine, goals, motivations, pain points etc.
Empathy Map
An empathy map was created to gain a deeper insight into the targeted users. The process gave better understanding about the users.

Solution Ideas
- Customisable reminder system: Develop a robust system that allows users to set personalised medication and appointment reminders, with options for different notification methods and timing customisation.
- Intuitive medication management: Present medication information clearly, including schedules, dosage instructions, and refill reminders. Enable easy tracking of medication intake and marking doses as taken.
- Streamlined appointment management: Design a seamless system for users to view, receive notifications, and manage appointments with ease. Include the prominent display of appointment details and options for rescheduling or cancellation. > Idea to connect with NHS system.
- User profiles with family access: Implement secure profiles for users, allowing them to manage medication and appointment records. Enable authorised family members to access and support the user’s medication compliance and appointment management.
- Engaging health tips and education: Offer a dedicated section with interactive and personalised health tips and educational resources based on the user’s condition and preferences.
- Integration with healthcare providers: Explore integration with electronic health record systems or provider portals for seamless communication, prescription refills, appointment scheduling, and secure messaging.
- Regular user testing and feedback: Conduct thorough user testing, and gather feedback through surveys, ratings, and reviews to improve the app’s usability and address any pain points or usability issues.

Challenge: Engaging Doctors
Getting doctors involved in medication compliance and appointment app can present significant challenges.
Here’s an expanded explanation:
- One of the primary challenges is establishing seamless integration between the app and healthcare providers. This integration would allow doctors to access patient medication and appointment records, provide prescription refills, and communicate securely with patients. Overcoming technical barriers and ensuring data privacy and security are crucial aspects of this integration process.
- Another challenge lies in gaining active participation and engagement from doctors. Convincing doctors to adopt the app, review patient data, provide timely updates, and respond to patient inquiries or concerns can be a hurdle. Demonstrating the app’s value is crucial.
- Additionally, ensuring interoperability between the app and different healthcare systems used by doctors can be challenging. The app should be compatible with various electronic health record (NHS) systems or practice management software to facilitate seamless data sharing and collaboration.
Start a campaign
Overcoming these challenges requires effective communication and collaboration between app developers and healthcare providers. It is crucial to demonstrate the app’s benefits to doctors, address any concerns they may have, ensure data privacy and security, and provide an intuitive and user-friendly interface for doctors to interact with patient information.
Building strong partnerships and fostering collaboration with healthcare providers is key to gaining their trust, support, and active participation in the medication compliance and appointment app. By addressing these challenges, the app can enhance communication and coordination between doctors and patients, ultimately leading to improved healthcare outcomes.
